The market has shifted back to a more “normal” market following a tremendous hiring surge that ran from about April of 2021 through August of 2022. During that time companies increased their salaries to meet the supply level and decreased their expectations of the candidates. While we are no longer in a hiring surge, we are still seeing many great roles out there for top-notch candidates. So how do you separate yourself from the pack?
-
- Make sure your resume represents you as best as possible. Double and triple check for typographical and grammatical errors. Have someone else, like our WhiteCap recruiters, read it and make sure it accurately describes what you do. Aim for one page (don’t make the font too small to accomplish this), especially if you have under 10 years of experience.
- Check your voicemail and email at least once a day so you can respond quickly. Our recruiters want to get you started in a new role just as much as you do!
- Arrive early to your scheduled interview. Whether it’s via video or in-person, be ready 10-15 minutes ahead of time to allow for security lines and technical errors on the systems.
- Express your enthusiasm for the role. Do your research, come prepared with questions, and make sure you are fully engaged throughout the interview. Make sure you are dressed for success. This is an interview, and you never get a second chance to make a first impression!
- Be flexible. Know what your requirements are for a new position, but also be open minded to taking on additional tasks or adding in a couple more days to your in-office vs. hybrid preference.
- Set realistic salary expectations. Your WhiteCap recruiter will speak with you about what the current market trends are. We always want you to get the best possible offer! When researching on your own, make sure you’re accurately viewing current roles and focusing on the median number of a variety of roles in the same industry that you’re adequately qualified for.
- Say thank you! Everyone’s time is valuable and it is important you thank your interviewers for theirs! This is especially true in any role that requires strong writing skills, or is in the Administrative or HR sector of the market. Even if it’s a first-round phone screen, send a well-written, properly proofread thank 2you note within 2-24 hours of your interview.
