Women’s History Month began in 1978 as Women’s History Week in Sonoma County, California. The following year, the women-led movement spread to various communities across the country and after effective lobbying by a consortium of groups led by the National Women’s History Alliance, President Jimmy Carter issued a Presidential Proclamation declaring the week of March 8th, 1980 to be National Women’s History Week.

This tradition spread internationally, continuing until 1987 when Congress passed legislation with widespread support designating March as Women’s History Month. Each year since 1995, the President has issued a Proclamation affirming this designation.
